Association spokesman and the United Mine Workers Construction (AMCU) Manzini Zungu said about 115 miners trapped underground after Makonjwaan Gold Mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga province, a landslide on Friday around 08:40 local time.
"At the moment not yet clear what caused the disaster," Zungu said as reported by Reuters on Friday (05/02/2016).
The mine is located about 360 kilometers east of Johannesburg.
ER24 rescue agency spokesman said that so far 49 miners have been successfully removed from the underground. They suffered only minor injuries.
