Initially, he was allegedly exposed to dengue fever. However, the results of a medical test declared him negative dengue fever. After further investigation, he tested positive for Zika virus infection.
"Of the 103 specimens (dengue) we examined, we found one positive (infected) Zika virus," said the center's deputy director, Herath Sudoyo, told AFP on Monday (02/01/2016).
Herath said the specimens were taken during the outbreak of dengue fever in Jambi between December 2014 and April 2015. It is not known how and when the man contracted the Zika virus. "We conclude that the virus has spread in Indonesia for a while," he said.
Indonesia's health ministry has not confirmed the report of the agency's findings about Zika virus in Jambi. The virus that has infected thousands of people in Latin America that is transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito that has been spreading dengue fever and chikungunya virus.
